Summary

SUMMARY

The Registered Nurse provides comprehensive clinical support services to students (typically aged 16–24) at the Jacobs Creek Job Corps Center. The role focuses on delivering high-quality healthcare, including early detection, diagnosis, and prevention/education, to help students become responsible and productive citizens.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Student Assessments: Perform cursory health evaluations within 48 hours of student arrival, including health history, vital signs, and laboratory testing.
  • Clinical Care: Hold regularly scheduled sick-calls, assess and treat minor illnesses, and manage trauma or emergency cases.
  • Medication Management: Administer medications and treatments according to authorized physician orders and collaborate with providers to monitor students on psychotropic or chronic medications.
  • Preventative Health: Determine immunization currency and provide or arrange for needed vaccinations.
  • Health Education: Counsel and train students on hygiene, nutrition, exercise, and the prevention of pregnancy, STDs, and HIV.
  • Case Management: Collaborate with the Center Mental Health Consultant (CMHC) and medical providers to develop and monitor care plans for students with chronic conditions.
  • Administrative Duties: Maintain accurate medical records, prepare narrative and statistical reports, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) annually.
  • Compliance: Prepare for and participate in Program Compliance Assessments (PCA) and internal record audits.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • Clinical Expertise: Ability to provide primary care for trauma and emergency situations.
  • Teamwork: Ability to work both independently and as a member of a healthcare team.
  • Confidentiality: Strict adherence to HIPAA and the Privacy Act regarding student health records.
  • Communication: Proficiency in documenting student interactions and communicating with parents, off-center providers, and center staff.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

Education Requirements

  • Degree: Graduate of an accredited professional nursing program with an Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN) or a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).
  • Licensure: Active, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of Tennessee or a multistate license through the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC).
  • Certifications: Current Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification for healthcare providers.

Experience Requirements

  • Clinical Experience: Minimum of 1 to 2 years of general professional nursing experience.
  • Specialized Skills: Prior experience in ambulatory care, emergency triage, occupational health, or correctional/institutional healthcare is strongly preferred.
  • Competencies: Demonstrated knowledge of physical assessment, triage protocols, medication management, and basic mental health coordination.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY There are no supervisory duties required with this position.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT The RN works within the wellness center/dispensary of a Job Corps Center. The environment requires maintaining proper safeguards for controlled substances and securing all equipment and supplies per center requirements.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS The role requires physical ability to perform clinical tasks such as triage, administering treatments, and providing emergency care (BLS).

 

ROLE and LOCATION SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS

  • Location: Jacobs Creek Job Corps Center, Tennessee which is in a rural area.
  • Programs: Participate in the Tobacco Use Prevention Program (TUPP) and Healthy Eating Active Lifestyles (HEALs) committee.
  • Disability Support: Participate in the Disability/Reasonable Accommodations program and triage applicant files for accommodation needs.

POSITION TYPE/EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK This is a clinical position with hours established in coordination with center personnel, typically Monday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours may vary based on student population needs, and the RN does not work on federal holidays.

 

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS Travel outside of the daily commute is generally not expected.

 

CLEARANCE/LICENSE REQUIREMENTS

  • Licensure: Active, unrestricted RN license.
  • Certification: Maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Screening: Must pass a criminal background check and drug testing as a prerequisite for performance.
  • Insurance: Maintain required insurance coverage throughout the performance period.
